Soultrap is the hottest new venue in Sydney. We chat with the guy in charge of music Josh Craker.

Josh Craker is relatively new to the music industry, but he’s already making waves as kick starting one of Sydney’s most exciting new venues.

We all know that a night of live music is one of the all time self care gifts, and Thursday nights are where it’s at when Soultrap is the destination. You can expect to be surprised every time you go, with a sophisticated mix of cocktails and light snacks, plus an atmosphere that’s reflective of those shadowy hazy clubs of days gone by.

Deep under the streets of Surry Hills Soultrap is definitely one for the diary if you’re looking for some fresh new music and a taste of something with a bit of character.

We caught up with Josh to get the story of Soultrap and what we can expect to come from the venue in 2018.

1.  How did the idea of running music events at Soultrap come about? 

I guess the idea of running live music at Soultrap, came from both mine and Chris Lehroux extensive involvement in metropolitan nightlife in Sydney, London and Paris. Upon the formation Soultrap we identified a severe lacking in cultural identity within the Sydney CBD and both lamented upon experiences we had in Sydney before the implementation of draconian laws. Pubs, bars, clubs and watering-holes alike, all have a unique ability to bring people from differing backgrounds together under one roof. We decided to utilise this commonality through music to provide a sense of culture across this pokie stricken cityscape.

2. What have you found to be the key things that make a show great and why? 

In my personal experience a good show consists of a few things firstly, a sense of engagement with the audience be it emotional or direct engagement. The act needs to set, control and drive the mood of the evening. Secondly, the crowd plays a major role in the direction of the evening, a willingness to be guided by the act and an open minded approach to ‘fun’ creates an awesome vibe where everyone can be taken on a journey. Finally the venue plays a vital role in accomodating the mood of the evening for the patrons and providing a safe space for all involved.

3. The venue has a real mix of artists, what made you choose to keep it varied? 
Variety is key to a good experience, an experience is never the same the second time. By having a variety of genres and acts we hope to draw people to the venue from across a multitude of backgrounds whom are searching for a new and invigorating experience. By hosting a multitude of acts we are also providing a greater opportunity a larger scope of local acts to gain exposure and purvey a broader sense of local culture upon the audience.
4. What are you hoping to achieve with Soultrap? 
Honestly, with Soultrap we are looking to ignite a different sense of enjoyment within Sydney. By letting our product of good food, boutique drinks  and unique millinery do the heavy lifting we are supporting the notion of not needing to completely lose control on an evening out. By combining this with live music we will be providing a truly unique experience. There’s not many places you can enjoy a vieux carre or diplomat paired with Jamon and Bleu cheese, and grab a cheeky fascinator for a soirée all at the same time.
5. Tell me a bit about Soultrap and why we should know about it? 
Simply put at Soultrap we are about providing Patrons with a unique and remarkable experience. We share striving to fill a void in Sydney’s nightlife through great drinks, good food and engaging entertainment.
